Have you seen Sigma’s answer to a perfect wide-angle lens? The SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN lens is what many people call a stable in the focal length range. With a diverse range of wide-angle and medium focal length, this lens is ideal for everyday shooting. Made for Sony mirrorless cameras and the Leica-L mount alliance, you can expect this lens to perform in even the most challenging of shooting environments. Take a look at what we thought of the exciting lens in our latest Georges Cameras TV review.

Is The Build Quality of the SIGMA 28-70mm Robust Enough for Everyday Use?

The Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN lens aligns with other Contemporary lenses’ design ethos to ensure optimal quality in a neat package. If you’re looking for a compact and lightweight standard zoom for your Sony E-mount camera, you cannot go wrong. The construction of the lens barrel is durable with materials and finishes. The focus ring is ridged and has a smooth glide for fine manual control. The aperture ring is likewise ridged and clearly marked with full stops.

The feedback from the ring allows you to control the aperture down to ⅓ stops without having to take your eyes from the prize. The full-frame lens is built to ensure whatever conditions you can throw at it. The Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN is dust and splash-proof and features water and oil repellent coatings on the front element.

But the magic happens inside with 16 elements in 12 groups, including two FLD elements, two SLD elements and three aspherical elements. The glass elements feature Super Multi-Layer and Nano Porous Coatings for maximum light management. The SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN features a 9-bladed aperture mechanism for precision control and gorgeous background elements.

What Is The Focus Performance Like on the SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Lens?

The SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Lens was manufactured to be closely aligned with the SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 Art Series lens. While you’re not getting the wider angle, the lens is just as consistent when it comes to focusing. When using the lens for the first time, you’ll notice the focus locks in quickly. This speed is all thanks to the precision stepping motor autofocus system, which many Sigma professionals swear by. So expect to be able to capture fast-moving subjects within close range.

Can You Expect Superb Image Quality from the Newest Contemporary Lens?

While the SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN is the smallest and lightest full-frame F2.8 standard zoom, it is big on performance and image quality. With an angle of view covering 75.4° to 34.3° and a minimum focus distance of 19cm, the sky’s the limit. Impressive specs are one thing, but the proof is in the image quality. The SIGMA 28-70mm delivers outstanding image quality.

The lens has been designed to correct all forms of aberration and distortion. Edge to edge sharpness is ensured due to a comprehensive element placement and grouping. What’s more, the constant F2.8 aperture ensures both adequate light and subject separation throughout the zoom range. Sharpness and detail are obvious, as is the way in which background elements are softened and blurred.

Final Thoughts: Should You Purchase the SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Lens?

We think the SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN lens holds true to a professional standard without the hefty price tag. You should expect this lens to be permanently on your Sony, Panasonic, Sigma or Leica full-frame mirrorless camera when travelling due to its versatile focal length.

While you could opt for the more expensive SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 ART series, we feel the 24mm isn’t justifiable if you are on a tight budget. There isn’t too much difference between 24mm and 28mm; if the environment warrants it, take a step back to make up the difference.

SIGMA 28-70mm Lens Review

When you compare it against the Tamron version, the Sigma is leaps and bounds ahead in terms of build quality and speed. The fact that you’re getting a dust and weather-resistant lens at an affordable price tag should be a big enough reason to go for this lens. So do yourself a favour and upgrade your kit lens to something that will give you the optical quality, speed and build quality that you demand.

In summary, if you are looking for a universal lens that’s practical for everyday shooting (family portraits, pets, flowers and more), then you’re likely to find this winner in your lens bag.
