I’m Hugo Isert a 14-year-old Australian photographer. I go to Cranbrook School in Sydney, Australia and I started getting into photography just a little over a year ago. Every weekend I go out and explore Sydney taking photos along the way and sharing them through Instagram and my website.
What gear do you use?
I currently use a Canon camera (200D ii) and a few Canon lenses. I am lucky enough to use Nisi filters, a Manfrotto tripod, and a Lowepro bag. Recently I purchased a Mavic 2 Pro and I have enjoyed experimenting with different perspectives over the coast of Sydney.
What type of photography are you into?
I love all aspects of photography but the photography I enjoy the most is landscape photography, wildlife photography, and night photography.
How did you get into photography?
I started photography at my school as I would take photos of students playing sports as part of a Student Marketing Team. I then took camera gear home and instantly fell in love with landscape photography, as I have lived near the ocean my entire life.
Top 3 photo locations
Over this past year, I have shot all around NSW but I have thought of my top 3 favorite locations:
3) Coogee Beach (Sydney)
2) Jervis Bay (South Coast)
1) The Rocks (Sydney)
Top 3 editing tips
1) When I’m shooting landscapes I always compose my image a bit wider then I would like it. This gives me more flexibility in post-processing as I can crop the image if the camera was on a tilt.
2) I always shoot RAW. This allows me to play around with my shadows, highlights, and colours in post-processing, better than JPEG ever could.
3) My last tip would be to always look back on your past photos and try to edit them again to your best ability. You would be surprised by how many photos with potential, that I found on my old memory card and with a bit of re-editing they looked amazing.
What has been your most memorable experience?
My most memorable experience was shooting bioluminescence on 2 occasions in Jervis Bay. The visual sight of pink water during the day and vibrantly blue water at night is such an awesome experience that many people should try and see in their lives.
If you had a superpower what would it be?
If I had a superpower it would be flying. It would be amazing to be able to fly to different destinations and to also be able to get a different perspective of the world from high up.
What have you been doing at home during this time?
During the pandemic, I have been social-distancing in Jervis Bay whilst having remote learning classes with my school. After online schooling or during the break, I would walk to Huskisson beach observing the scenery whilst also scouting for new photography locations.
