Hey! My name’s Darcy Jones. Professionally I am a specialty barista, but outside of my 40 hour week, I have spent years travelling around the world from Australia to Europe, North Africa, the Caucasus, and through the Middle East, through to South East Asia and the Pacific Islands. I’ve met the people, eaten the foods, and captured every moment of it in still photography.
What gear do you use?
I started off with my beloved Fujifilm X-T10 + kit lens but eventually upgraded to the X-T4 with a bunch of prime lenses. I also grabbed DJI’s small action camera for underwater shots and borrowed my brothers Mavic Air for some drone fun.
What type of photography are you into?
I love landscape and travel photography mostly but have recently started dabbling in macro photography and I’m really loving it!
How did you start photography? What inspires you?
My love for photography happened by accident if I’m honest. I was a 19-year-old with a one-way ticket to the other side of the world, with no plans, some savings, and a camera. I never went anywhere without it in my hand, and the camera just became part of me. The places, people, and moments in time I have captured and saved are so special to me, and I just love sharing that.
Although it’s not the kind of photography I work in (yet), I’m very inspired by wildlife photographers such as Paul Nicklin, Karim Iliya, and Juan Oliphant. The places they go, the amazing beasts they’re surrounded by and the conservation work they do is unreal. Truly awesome.
Top 3 photo locations?
That’s a really hard one, but I’d have to say;
1- Vanuatu for the volcanos and beaches
2- Iran for the Architecture
3- Georgia (the country not the state) for the mountainous landscape
Top 3 photo/editing tips?
I’m still learning this myself. I guess I don’t quite have any tips yet but I’m all ears for suggestions!
What has been your most memorable experience?
Oof… that’s a very hard one, and so many different answers for different reasons. But I’d have to say my most recent trip to Vanuatu would be at the top of my list currently. The contrast of fear and excitement while standing on the crater of an active volcano, watching it spew lava toward you is an emotion I don’t know the name for. I want to do it again!
If you had superpowers, what would yours be?
Superpower? Hmm… I’d probably have to go on a flight, just so I don’t have to buy plane tickets anymore!
What have you been doing at home during this time?
During the lockdown, I’ve mainly been collecting house plants. But I have finally found the time to go through and edit old and new travel photos. Literally thousands of them. sharing my adventures on Instagram with the hope of bringing the world a bit closer to everyone while we are stuck at home.
