My name is Jason King, I’m a food photographer and I like to eat. I’m also a restaurant and movie critic. You can check out my food at @spooningaust
What gear do you use to take your photos?
Sony all the way. I shoot on a Sony a7rii and if Coronavirus ever buggers off I would like a nice upgrade. I like to shoot on prime lenses and because food is regularly in low light I have a Samyang 35mm 1.4 and a Sigma Art Series 40mm 1.4 and also Tamron 17-28 2.8 to shoot on.
What type of photography are you into?
It’s primarily food shooting for restaurants and products. I shoot a lot of restaurant instagram accounts around Sydney.
How did you start photography? What/Who inspires you?
I was always a hobby photographer right back to Nikon FA shooting a lot of nature shots on film, model photos and product shots. Then my food blogging took off and I was writing a lot but not taking photos so I decided to start shooting the food, then it took off and the rest, as they say, is history. Photographers that inspire me are @dennistheprescott @glenonww @paulpapayasalad and @kerabeareats and what inspires me? Good lighting and fresh food, plating is key!!
Top 3 photo locations to shoot?
Hmmmm – restaurants with good light and wonderful tables haha. Chiswick, Flour Drum Newtown, Brae.
Top 3 photo tips?
Well in regards to photography in restaurants. If your phone has portrait mode use it, lighting is key so take an extra minute or two and move your plate to get the best light and be aware of your surroundings, move the Coke can or your guest’s handbag out of the background.
Another one, we all know what dishes look like – bring them to life and have fun with them!
One final tip – get editing software – even the iphone editing software is awesome!
What has been your most memorable experience?
Eating Oyster Ice Cream at Brae. Brae is Australia’s #1 restaurant. Shooting the food was phenomenal.
If you were a superhero, what would be your super power?
This drove me insane – I had to Google what superhero are you? And it’s quite accurate hahaha.
I want to be Spider-Man but I’m too scared of heights haha. Thanks Buzzfeed!! I like it – she’s human but also has a dark side .
You got: Black Widow
You’re a fixer, a closer, a doer — the type of person who is the first one in and the last one out, because if there’s anyone you trust to get something done, it’s you. You used to hate group projects in high school — too many variables, and you ended up just doing all the work anyway. But hey, it’s served you well.
