Design and Construction
As far as construction goes, Sony pretty much nails it most of the time and that is the case with the Sony 200-600mm. Lens feels quite solid yet for the size is relative lightweight and compact. Although this wouldn’t be an everyday lens, the size of it will fit into most mid sized camera backpacks.
The lens has a tripod collar which can be rotated all the way around and a easy to release tripod foot, if you wish to use the lens without it, There are multiple focus lock buttons around the lens for easy access to settings. Finally the zoom and focus rings have good dampening and feel good to use.
The Sony 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 sports a pretty solid performance. It has three modes of optical image stabilisation which can work in conjunction with Sonys 5 axis in body stabilisation. Although the focusing motor isn’t as sophisticated as the 100-400mm GM, it still works well. Focusing is quiet and rapid.
Image quality on the Sony 200-600mm is solid. The lens performs best when stopped down to F8 as images look a bit softer at wider apertures. Overall the lens provides a crisp image.
In conclusion the Sony 200-600mm is a solid super telephoto choice for any enthusiast looking for a versatile super tele lens. For it’s price point, size and features it will be a popular lens for the years to come.
