The Sony mirrorless range had missed out on a camera for the vloggers. The lenses, AF technology and sensor technology was there but there wasn’t a staple camera that was devoted to the cause. Introducing the Sony a6400, a brand new APS-C addition to the Sony line up which may be Sonys solution to appeal to the content creators.
- 24.2MP APS-C Exmor CMOS Sensor
- BIONZ X Image Processor
- 3.0″ 921.6k-Dot 180° Tilting Touchscreen
- Internal UHD 4K Video
- 425 Phase- & Contrast-Detect AF Points
- Up to 11 fps Shooting and ISO 102,400
Design & Handling
Basically identical to any other Sony 6000 series camera, the a6400 sports a similar form factor, buttons and ergonomics. Where it differs is the screen and the hinge that houses the screen. The screen is a 3 inch touch screen with a 16:9 ratio making it perfect for playback and composition for video. Photographers will have to deal with tiny black edges on playback as photos are generally shot as 3:2.
In addition the hinge at the back of the screen allows flipping to 180 degrees. For selfie shooters or vloggers this will come in handy for composition. However when an external mic is attached on top of the camera, the screen is no longer visible.
Autofocus performance has been refined on the a6400. A brand new real time AF and 3D object tracking algorithm has been implemented. There are improvements in:
– AF-C tracking
– Eye AF tracking
– Facial tracking
Video quality wise the a6400 is quite flexible boasting 4K UHD up to 30p and Full HD up to 120p. However there is the exclusion of 5 axis IBIS which is present in the a6500. Therefore it would be ideal to have a gimbal stabiliser or some form of stabilisation tool for a smoother capturing experience.
Imagery is excellent on the a6400. For content creators looking to produce video and photo content, the a6400 is extremely capable for both.
The Sony a6400 is a well all rounded camera with great image and video quality. For its price point it will be a very attractive camera for many enthusiasts and content creators. Watch our full review below:
