Last week alongside Panasonic Australia we hosted an event at World Time Attack at Sydney Motorsport Park. This is an annual event held that attracts time attack drivers from across the globe to compete. We brought along a bunch of gear with us such as the Panasonic GH5, GH5S, G9 and a bunch of lenses. The event attendees got a chance to use the gear throughout the duration of the event. We asked one attendee in particular, Mitch Naylor, a long time motorsport photographer his thoughts on the Panasonic G9.
All photographs shown were shot by Mitch Naylor with a Panasonic G9 + 200mm F2.8 lens.
1. Whats your usual setup for shooting motorsport?
I use a Canon 6D Mk1 body with either a 70-200 F4 or 400mm F5.6 depending on the location on track.
2. What do you love most about shooting motorsport?
Capturing movement in a still image. Drift images are a perfect example, there is so much going on in one frame.
3. We lent you a Panasonic G9 with a 200mm F2.8 lens (equivalent of 400mm F2.8) what were your thoughts initially when you held the system?
How can i get more time with it! It is light, fast, and jam packed with features. The image stabilisation was top notch. I was panning at 1/80 and 1/100 with ease.
4. What do you think of the performance, and what is it like compared to your kit?
Fast and sharp. the Autofocus was instant. No hunting for an AF point, just snapped instantly to where I was pointing letting me capture the next car flying past. My 6D is more suited to static, setup shots. The G9 crushed it by far in the fast panning game.
5. Whats your favourite thing about the Panasonic G9 system?
The autofocus is instant. The body and lens is light compared to my normal kit. The shutter speed, this was my favourite. I’m used to getting maybe 6 frames a second in a pan if i’m lucky, I filled my SD card instantly with the G9. The insane frame rates this beast kicks out is super impressive. My keep vs delete ratio was 1 in 5 on the G9 vs 1 in maybe 100 for my 6D.
