Over the course of 15 years and more than 300000 photos, Mexico based photographer Sergio Tapiro shot a once in a lifetime epic Volcano shot. Sergio has shot the Volcáno de Colima for over 15 years trying to nail the perfect shot.
He self taught himself photography in 2002 and since then has been consistently visiting this spot trying to make an award winner. Tapiro has been constantly studying the patterns of the moon and to find the ideal night to shoot. Three days prior to the night that he shot the photo he had noticed there was unusual activity around the volcano.
He set up his shot about 7-8 miles away from the volcano and continually shot 8 second exposures. Then with a stroke of luck the volcano started to erupt. Caught out by surprise Tapiro reviewed his photos and noticed one of them he had captured a lighting strike at the same time as the eruption.
This photo has been recognised by World Press Photo and National Geographic. I’m sure to Tapiro, this volcano will always have a special place in his heart.
