Over the last two years I’ve seen a rise in the demand for stabilised video, especially with electronic stabilisers. It’s one of the biggest innovations for stabilisation since the inception of the glidecam. Now with the Zhiyun Crane line up, they’ve made stabilisation super accessible at a very attractive price point.
The Zhiyun Crane series are a compact single hand stabiliser that works on a variety of cameras from compacts to DSLRs. They are super easy to use and all it requires is a bit of balancing prior to starting. Each of the Zhiyun Cranes have three stabilisation modes: Pan Follow, Lock and Follow modes which all serve a different purposes in terms of movement.
The best thing about the Zhiyun Crane or DJI ronin or any other electronic stabiliser is that it’s a lot more forgiving than a glidecam in terms of movement. They use electric motors to stabilise and allow you to be more carefree and focus on the action. Whereas the glidecam is physically more taxing and less forgiving if you do make a sudden footing mistake.
It’ll be interesting to see where stabilised video goes over time but for now we have the power of electronic gimbal stabilisers at our disposal.
